ಚರಿತ್ರಾ

ಜೂನಾಚಾ 10, 2018 ವೆರ್ ಇಟೆಲಿಚ್ಯಾ ಪಾದ್ವಾ ಥಾವ್ನ್ ಸಾಂತ್ ಅಂತೊನಿಚಿ ರೆಲಿಕ್ ಆಮ್ಚ್ಯಾ ಕೊಪೆಲಾಂತ್ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನ್ ಕೆಲಿ. ಜೂನಾಚಾ 13 ತಾರಿಕೆರ್ ಸಾಂ ಅಂತೊನಿಚೆ ತಾರಿಕೆಚೆ ಫೆಸ್ತ್ ಆನಿ ಫೆಬ್ರೆರ್ 15 ತಾರಿಕೆರ್ ರೆಲಿಕೆಚೆ ಫೆಸ್ತ್ ವ್ಹಡಾ ದಬಾಜಾನ್ ಆಚರಣ್ ಕರ್ತಾಂವ್. ಪುರ್ಶಾಂವ್ ಕಾಡ್ನ್ ರೆಲಿಕೆಕ್ ಮಾನ್ ಕರ್ತಾಂವ್. ಹರೆಕಾ ಮಂಗ್ಳಾರಾ ಹಾಂಗಾಸರ್ ನೊವೆನ್ ಆನಿ ಮೀಸ್ ಆಸಾ, ಮಹಿನ್ಯಾಚ್ಯಾ ಪಯ್ಲ್ಯಾ ಮಂಗ್ಳಾರಾ ಸಾಕ್ರಾಮೆಂತಾಚ್ಯೆ ಆರಾಧಾನ್, ನೊವೆನ್ ಆನಿ ಮೀಸ್ ಆಸಾ. ಜಾಯ್ತೊ ಲೋಕ್ ಯೇವ್ನ್ ಆತ್ಮೀಕ್ ಬರೆಂಪಣ್ ಆನಿ ಮಾಗ್ಲಲೆ ಉಪ್ಕಾರ್ ಜೊಡ್ತಾ.
St Antony Chapel – Location and History
Location:
If you cross Belman and proceed in Padubudri-Karkal state highway towards Karkal, you can see giant rock on your left and a small chapel on your right. That is the chapel of St Antony of Pakala.
History
Long ago, when there was no transport facility available, people were walking the destination to earn their daily bread. Fisher-women were visiting the villages to sell the fish they brought. Barter system was still prevailing at that time. Accordingly, they used to exchange fish for rice, paddy, vegetable and firewood and would return to their place by evening.
There was tradition to stay/rest at the ancestral house of Certain Raay D’Silva. Once it so happened, the fisher women were taking rest after selling their merchandise. When they were ready to leave in the evening, they could not lift the baggage full of firewood; it was too heavy. They emptied one wooden piece from their baggage. And then only they could lift the baggage. The elder of the house inspected the wooden piece and found it to be a statue of St Antony. They installed the wooden statue at their residence with due reverence. Since then, the devotion of St. Antony gained the popularity. From the time of late Francis D’Silva to the time of late Piad D’Silva, the devotion continued at their residence. By the time passed, the devotion spread amongst the non-Christians too, for they were getting the favours for their intentions. For all the favours received by Christians and non-Christians, proof speaks for itself. Another incident happened in the area. A person was transporting stolen wood on his bullock cart and passing through the chapel. At once the cart got struck and couldn’t move either forward/backward. Only after that person came down in front of the statue, poured the oil and lighted the lamp in front of the statue, the cart moved. As people were getting favours when their children and livestock were sick they used to light candle, offer oil and other articles as a mark of gratitude for the favours received.
As the years passed by, the house which the statue was kept started becoming old and outdated. The elders of the area discussed with the leader of the house Piad D’Silva and asked his permission to establish the statue in the public forum. SVP adopted the family and offered all the assistance they needed. In 1973, a committee was formed to establish the statue in the public forum. The committee members John Mathias, Remedia D’Souza, Alphonsus Agera, Late Mathias D’Silva, Late Thomas Menezes, Late Basil Noronha, Late Francis D’Silva, Late Joseph D’Silva visited neighbouring houses, collected the donation and built a small chapel. It was blessed by Fr Nicholas J. Pereira.
Non-Christians around this area visit this chapel, pour the oil, light the lamp and pray before beginning any work. A certain non-Christian businessman visits the shrine daily and lights the lamp and then only proceeds to commence the business. So in this area St Antony is famously known as ‘Pakalada Dever’ – ‘God of Pakala’. The passersby have the tradition to visit the shrine and light the lamp. On June 10, 2018 the relic of St Antony was brought from Padua, Italy and was ceremoniously brought in procession from Belman church to Pakala and installed in the chapel.
From the past many years, the titular feast of St Antony is being celebrated on June 13 and Feast of relic on February 15 respectively. On every Tuesday there is mass and Novena, on first Tuesday of every month there is adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, mass and novena. Many devotees from different places gather, pray and obtain grace from God through the intercession of St Antony.
